Oru Naal Iravil (In the night of one day) is a 2015 Indian Tamil languagethriller film edited and directed by Anthony in his directorial debut. A remake of Joy Mathew's successful Malayalam film Shutter (2012), the film stars Sathyaraj in the lead role. The film is presented by A. L. Vijay and produced by A. L. Azhagappan and Sam Paul. The film opened to rave reviews on its release.

Plot[edit]

Shekar (Sathyaraj) is an NRI working in Singapore. He comes to his hometown Chennai after completing his contract. He sees his daughter riding a bike with a male classmate. Fearing that she would stray, he arranges for her to get married as soon as possible and ends her college education. Shekar has invested in a commercial property next to his house which he has let out to store owners, except for one garage. Since he is home, he meets his friends here and they bond every night over a few peg of drinks. One of them is Suri (Varun), a young autorickshaw driver. Around the same time, Sethu (Yugi Sethu), a struggling former film director has written a script that is finally accepted by a producer. However, he leaves his bag by accident in Suri's rickshaw.

One day, Suri arranges for Shekar to rendezvous with a call girl in the unoccupied garage near his house to cheer him up after he has an argument with his family over his daughter's marriage and education. While getting some food, Suri bumps into Sethu who demands for his bag back. While traveling to get the bag, Suri is arrested by the police for driving under influence and is held at the local station for the whole night. Shekar and the call girl are left locked up in the garage for two nights in a row. During this time, Shekar convinces the call girl to remain quiet until Suri comes to get them since it would be embarrassing if anyone knows about why they are locked up there.

Shekar learns that the call girl was forced to stop college after getting married, but had to become a prostitute to feed her daughter after her husband left them. She only has one friend who she can call during emergencies, but she cannot call him now since he does not know she is a call girl. Shekar also explains that his house is nearby, which is why they cannot simply leave in broad daylight. The call girl also sees the bag with the script which Suri had left in the rickshaw. She reads the script and decides to take it with her. Meanwhile, they overhear Shekar's friends talking outside the garage and learn that one of them has ill intentions towards him.

When the coast is finally clear and Suri is released from the station, he comes to get Shekar out. However, Suri is shocked to see that the call girl had left, thinking that he had come to take her. Before leaving, she had told Shekar to call her Thangam. Suri takes the bag back to Sethu, who is shocked to see that his script is gone. Meanwhile, Shekar goes home and is welcomed by his family. It turns out that his daughter had arranged for her friend to unlock the garage. She had also realized the truth but lied to her family about her father leaving town for a few days to calm himself down. Following Thangam's advice, he calls off the engagement and allows his daughter to continue her education.

Meanwhile, Thangam goes to meet her only friend, who turns out to be Sethu. She gives him the script that she had taken, not realizing that it was originally his. Inspired by the sudden turn of events, Sethu decides to rewrite the script before directing his film.

Plot[edit]

The story of a single father Amudhavan and his daughter Pappa is told in chapters.

Amudhavan works in Dubai while his wife Stella lives in India with their 14-year old daughter Pappa who has a muscular health condition making her dependent to carry out daily functions. One day, Stella writes to Amudhavan asking him to take care of their daughter and leaves her family and runs away leading to Amu moving back home after 10 years to raise Pappa as a single father.

Amu finds it difficult to connect with Pappa having lived abroad for so long. They are shunned by their neighbours because of Pappa's health condition. They move in to his brother's house to live with his family and Amu's mother but his sister-in-law, irrationally fearing her own child will catch Pappa's 'illness' asks them to move out. Amu returns home with Pappa where he continuously fights with some locals trying to force him to sell the house and leave the neighbourhood. Pappa and Amu slowly start bonding. One night when Pappa begins menstruation, Amu helps a panicked Pappa relax and seeks help from a woman named Vijaylakshmi. Vijaylakshmi (Viji) offers her help in return for basic needs and starts living with Amu and Pappa. Gradually, Viji and Amu become closer and marry. However, Viji's motives are revealed when she tries to kill Pappa by pushing her into a well only to be stopped by Amu. Amu discovers Viji is already married and was pretending to help them to gain ownership of his house. A dejected Amu leaves the house to Viji and moves away. Having received no money, he is forced to leave Pappa at home while he goes to work.

Pappa falls sick and the doctor diagnoses her with a fungal infection. She also refers Amu to Dr. Dhanapal who advises him to let Pappa stay at a special home for others with her health condition. Amu agrees with a heavy heart. On his way home he meets a woman named Meera and they develop a bond. Meera helps him find a house. A few days later, while visiting Pappa, Amu discovers that Pappa was beaten by some workers at the home. He brings her back and seeks Dr. Dhanapal to understand more about Pappa's condition and her needs.

Feeling helpless, Amu decides to end his and Pappa's lives and the two walk into the sea at night but are saved by Meera. The last chapter of Amuvadhan's story is about great love as he reveals that Meera taught him about love and the two are married. Pappa stays happily with her loving father and step-mother, Meera.

Ram developed the script with Mammootty in mind six years before he narrated it to the actor during early 2015.[6][7] His regular composer Yuvan Shankar Raja with cinematographer Theni Eeswar were confirmed from then.[8] In July, Sadhana, the child artiste from his 2013 film Thanga Meengal, was cast.[9] After P. L. Thenappan was signed on to produce the film under his banner Shree Raajalakshmi Films, and Anjali was cast for the female lead, Ram announced the title Peranbu in January 2016 beginning through a first look poster.[10][11] Before filming, Ram stated that the film's theme is 'compassion' and Mammootty plays a family man who 'rediscovers himself,' while Sadhana plays his daughter, and Anjali the wife.[12]

Principal photography commenced on 6 January 2016 in Kodaikanal and was planned to be shot in two schedules, with the next being in Chennai.[13]Mammootty and Sadhana's scenes were shot in January end.[14] A lead role is portrayed by Anjali Ameer, a transsexual model from Kerala, in her feature film debut. For the role, the makers searched until 1 March 2016. She was selected with an audition, after Mammootty noticed a television report about her and suggested her name to Ram.[15][16] The second shooting schedule was held in and around Chennai from July to September.[17] In mid-2016, the team planned to make a Malayalam version of the film on Mammootty's suggestion.[6][18][19]Suraj Venjaramoodu joined the new version playing Mammootty's friend.[20] The dubbing and other post-production began from January 2017.[21][16] By September, Yuvan Shankar Raja composed all the songs and started working on the film score.[22][23]
